The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of English artists that created a secret society in 1848 in order to regain the beauty and simplicity of the Middle Ages. They considered themselves being against the materialistic art from the post-Industrial Revolution period and they intended to study the nature and to infuse their work with literary symbolism, even poetic, playing with bright colors and paying attention to the detail.

They liked to be called Pre-Raphaelites because they worked with a carefully technique and imagination not because they tried to imitate the early Italian painters. On the contrary, they considered Raphael's works as an easy abstractions.
The founders of this brotherhood were the artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), W. Holman Hunt (1827-1910), John Everett Millais (1829-1896), James Collinson (1825-1881), Frederic George Stephens (1828 - 1907), Thomas Woolner (1825-1892), and William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919).

The Pre-Raphaelite landscape used to be
painted outdoors to study nature attentively and to preserve
reality. Each accessory was carefully painted paying attention to the
detail. Women were depicted as a seductive virgins emanating
melancholy, showing pale skin and expressing a mixture of mystical
and sensual spirituality.
Their hair was wavy and ginger, they used to wear flowing dresses and in many cases, they were full of transparencies. They looked like goddesses of the flesh. Florence Welch, the English singer of the indie rock band Florence + the Machine, might be the best contemporary example of Pre-Raphaelite ideal woman.

Let's
talk about the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites in the
contemporary fashion. As an interesting example I would like to
introduce Valentino who brings us much of the Pre-Raphaelites's artistic
inspiration with his winter 2014 Haute Couture collection performed in a
romantic and graceful show that
took into account that these women were always represented in nature.

Obviously, Valentino was not the only master who approached this brotherhood of artists to find inspiration. Actually, the designer Anna Sui in her Spring-Summer Collection 2014 or Oscar de la Renta on his Summer 2012 Collection are just few examples of designers who have been submited to the appealing inspiration of Pre-Raphaelites.

Certainly this influence into fashion has successfully filled hundreds of fashion magazines:

One of the most striking cover was performed by the luxury magazine VOGUE and featured by Jessica Chastain last year who starred the pre-Raphaelite beauty:
Cinema has also resembled the Pre-Raphaelites, we find a clear reference with the actress Kristen Dunst starring in the drama film Melancholia (2011) by Lars von Trier turning into Bride Millais's Ophelia.

Unfortunately, the Pre-Raphaelites brotherhood lasted only five years since it was not in good news in a time when society would rather look the other way instead of opening their eyes to the harsh reality.
Hunger and prostitution were some of the issues that worried the artists and bohemians of that period and they kept capturing them through their paintings and writings.
It was not until the 80s when they began to be relevant and influential worldwide. Let's enjoy them now that we can.
