FAW: The VOGUE covers illustrators

Welcome back to a new FAW, the Fashion and Art Weekend section in which we talk about the relationship between Fashion and Art. The articles are written and directed by Silvia Moya , an expert fashion blogger, in exclusivity for Welldone Publishers

If you would like to know more about this section and to enjoy reading both English and Spanish the articles please click on the links below

The VOGUE covers illustrators by Silvia Moya

The fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue was born twice: first founded by Arthur Baldwin Turnure in 1892, and then again in 1906 with the arrival of Condé Nast Monrose, although it was under the direction of the second one that Vogue would make history with their covers.

Nast, advised by the leading French fashion designer Paul Poiret, hired famous illustrators with special predilection for French School whom signed the covers to be recognizable to the reader. One of the most contested was the American artist illustrator George Plank who also was the author of the one and only cover that Vogue has ever published twice:

While Vogue was reinventing the fashion magazine covers, Harper's Bazaar (its main competitor) shown also interest for illustration and worked with the Russian-born French artist and designer, Erté.

Almost unwittingly, both magazines inspired a new way of designing fashion covers to the point that the early twentieth century (until 1930 approx.) is also known as the The golden age of illustration.

During this period the most important names in the worldwide painting were interested on presenting their work to the fashion industry, not because of the benefits that they could earn but for the audience they could get as Vogue printed 100,000 copies and was published fortnight.

Dalí unveiled his Surrealism, Picasso or Braque launched the Cubism, while Gustav Klimt put the Vienna Secession into fashion.

Could you imagine these coversSome buyers  bought them as precious collections (Picasso's cover for 35 cents?).

Now it makes sense that this period was known as The golden age of illustration because magazine covers worked as windows where the image projected was more relevant than the text: illustration alone suggested all the information the reader needed to know.

As example, if the cover model was looking into shop window display the reader would know the issue was devoted to shopping; the fact of wearing an specific hat it would mean this one was the last trend; In essence, the quote "a picture is worth a thousand words" applies very well in that case.

Having said that, is interesting to highlight that not all the covers were the work of established artists. Many illustrators made their career in this industry, as the illustrator George Plank did (who was loyal to VOGUE from 1911-1927) or the fellow American Helen Dryden who was an illustrator for the same magazine from 1912-1923.

The French Georges Lepape or the Spanish Eduardo Benito were the next generation to illustrate the American edition covers, as well as the British and the French's covers (they had already been released). Lepape painted a total of 114 covers, while Benito reached the 144.

The end of an era came when magazine sales dropped and VOGUE began to explore new marketing sources to attract consumers. The idea was to focus on documentary issues closed to photography.

Happily the vintage fashion covers are well documented and nowadays we can still enjoy them!.

Will VOGUE ever turn artistic on its covers
